BOTOX®

BOTOX® cosmetic, or botulinum toxin, is an exciting procedure being performed today to reduce wrinkles around the forehead, eyes, and neck region. BOTOX® cosmetic is basically a medicine which paralyzes small muscles that cause wrinkles. When that muscle become paralyzed, the wrinkles disappear. The thought of paralysis of a muscle is quite frightening but this procedure has been used successfully in opthamology for many years and over the last several years in plastic surgery with minimal to no complications. When used in the forehead and mid-eye brow region, lines are literally erased when the area is treated. Fine lines around the eyes and "crows feet" may also be treated with this modality. Overactive muscle in the neck which can cause banding in the neck has also been treated successfully with BOTOX® cosmetic injections.

BOTOX® is not permanent, and must be repeated every three to six months. Studies have shown, however, that after repeated treatments, many times the muscle becomes extremely weak and the time between injections can increase.

Complications that arise from this can include weakness or ptosis of the eyebrow or eyelid; however, this can be treated with eye drops and is self-limiting as this medicine is not permanent. BOTOX® cosmetic treatment in the above described areas has an extremely high satisfaction rate, can be done during one's lunch hour and is an excellent treatment for these types of wrinkles.
