Dermal Fillers

DERMAL FILLERS IN NEW YORK, NY

Dermal Fillers, which are also known as injectable fillers, are plumping agents that are introduced into the subepidermal layers of tissue to cosmetically enhance areas of the face and body. Through a hypodermic needle, dermal fillers can be used to smooth the skin where wrinkles and folds create an uneven texture. Gel injections can also plump areas of the face like the lips and cheeks, which may be naturally lacking in contour or may have lost volume over time. Many patients are drawn to this treatment because it is fast to undergo, does not require any downtime for healing, and can provide excellent results at a lower cost than traditional plastic surgery. Dr. Tornambe of Madison Plastic Surgery – New York City is an expert at treating patients with dermal fillers for a wide array of skin conditions that detract from one’s natural attractiveness.

ABOUT DERMAL FILLERS

Dermal filler products vary in regard to their formulation: some are organic, which means they have been created with ingredients existing in the human body, and others are manmade. The longevity of a dermal filler will also differ amongst products and placement methods. In order to qualify as an Expert Injector, a physician must be familiar with all properties of dermal fillers, how each functions, the duration of their effectiveness, and which filler is best suited for each individual’s needs.

Dr. Tornambe has been providing dermal filler injections to his patients for over 20 years at his New York City practice as a qualified Expert Injector. He takes the time necessary to evaluate each individual’s dermal filler needs while providing the best possible solutions to rejuvenate each face. The results are a natural and polished aesthetic. All dermal filler procedures are personally performed by Dr. Tornambe.

AREAS OF THE FACE THAT BENEFIT FROM DERMAL FILLERS

Cosmetic injections can treat numerous areas of the face. Beginning with the forehead and moving downward, the deep lines and wrinkles that appear on the brow can be treated with dermal fillers. Next, the tear troughs of the eyes, or the hollowed regions that can appear over time or following an aggressive blepharoplasty, can be filled. Below the eyes, the nose, which can suffer defects due to trauma or an unsuccessful rhinoplasty, can be corrected through a session of dermal filler injections. This treatment plan can also add volume to the cheeks and lips, which can become depleted of their natural fullness as part of the aging process or medical conditions that cause extreme weight loss. Dermal fillers can successfully correct nasolabial folds, which occur as smile lines of the mid-cheeks. Lastly, Dr. Tornambe can add contour and volume to the jaw and chin.

DERMAL FILLERS OPTIONS

While there are numerous injectables approved for cosmetic use, Dr. Tornambe has selected products that have provided his patients with safe, reliable use during his many years of experience in performing this procedure. His approved injections have a solid clinical history of consistent success with minimal side effects.

HYALURONIC ACID

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar found in the human body (including skin). It offers the advantage of minimal risk of allergic reaction since the body tends to recognize this familiar substance. While there are several hyaluronic acid dermal filler products available, lines and wrinkles of the face are best treated by the injectables JUVÉDERM® and RADIESSE®.

JUVÉDERM®

JUVÉDERM is a formulated hyaluronic acid gel with a smooth consistency that restores volume and hydration to each treatment site. The gel is injected under the skin to instantly smooth away facial wrinkles and folds like “smile lines” or “parentheses” that envelop the mouth, medically known as nasolabial folds

JUVÉDERM options include the following:

  • JUVÉDERM® VOLIFT® with lidocaine for smile lines
  • JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA® with lidocaine for lip enhancement
  • JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® with lidocaine for facial volume enhancement and rejuvenation
  • JUVÉDERM® ULTRA™ and ULTRA PLUS™ XC with lidocaine for the mouth and nose area

The addition of lidocaine to each of these JUVÉDERM products ensures a comfortable patient experience during and after treatment as it serves as a local anesthetic. JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® is a recent brand development that has been termed “The Liquid Facelift,” providing volume to the cheekbone and mid-face region and lifting this central area of the face.

RADIESSE®

The second most effective filler, RADIESSE is a next-generation dermal plumper that provides exceptional correction of set-in facial folds and wrinkles, such as deep-set smile lines. Composed of calcium-based microspheres suspended in a water-based gel, RADIESSE is injected into the skin, providing patients with immediate, visible anti-aging effects and long-lasting results. Not only does the gel instantly raise the lines to the level plane of the skin, it also promotes continued production of collagen for optimal skin health.

RADIESSE is available in two formulations:

  • RADIESSE®
  • RADIESSE® (+), or RADIESSE®  Plus with lidocaine

The formulas are identical aside from the addition of lidocaine to RADIESSE (+). Sometimes referred to as injectable implants, these fillers are a favorite among patients as they actually aid in cosmetic repair by correcting the internal structure of the skin.

DERMAL FILLERS – THE PROCEDURE

During the series of injections, the doctor utilizes nerve blocks or topical anesthetics to maximize comfort level. There may be minimal swelling and bruising immediately after the treatment, but the application of ice packs helps these side effects to subside within an hour. Most people return to work the same day, having scheduled the procedure during their lunch hour. While there is no downtime following a dermal filler treatment, intense physical activity should be avoided for 12 hours.

Most dermal fillers will not provide permanent results and must be repeated every six to nine months, though JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® and RADIESSE® provide longer lasting fixes of up to two years. It should be noted that the side effects of JUVÉDERM are mild to moderate in nature and can last up to one week. The most common reactions are temporary injection-site redness, pain or tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps or bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration.

Dermal filler injections are performed in Dr. Tornambe’s Upper East Side office in New York City. Patients will be scheduled with a follow-up appointment with the doctor 7-10 days after the first series of injections, and minor touch-ups can be performed at that time if needed.

NON-SURGICAL MAKEOVER

Minimally invasive cosmetic treatments appeal to patients who may not yet show significant signs of aging and wish to rejuvenate their existing facial features. Most patients of the non-surgical makeover are men and women who are middle aged or younger and dissatisfied with one or more facial regions or features. Many conditions can detract from one’s looks, such as trauma, health problems, or even genetics. The face is how people represent themselves, and it cannot be hidden away due to issues of self-confidence.

Dr. Tornambe provides patients with a custom treatment plan which may involve multiple procedures to fulfill an individual’s needs. The procedures result in refined aesthetics of specific facial regions. Dr. Tornambe has been performing non-surgical makeovers in New York City for over 20 years, providing alternatives to surgical options like rhinoplasty and lip or cheek augmentation with implants. Defining structures of the face including the nose, jawline, and chin can benefit from dermal fillers. The cheeks and lips can be plumped through JUVÉDERM® or RADIESSE® injections. In addition to these features, the doctor is able to improve the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids and create changes that most plastic specialists can only achieve through the eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).

Through dermal plumpers, the doctor can successfully treat uneven skin texture, volume loss, and lines and wrinkles of facial skin. Areas like the forehead and mid-brow may also benefit from BOTOX® injections, laser resurfacing treatments, or TCA chemical peel. These non-surgical treatment options can be performed alone or in combinations to provide optimal results.

CANDIDATES

Prospective dermal filler patients may have concerns about lines, wrinkles, or dissipating facial volume that they feel detracts from their appearance. This procedure can enhance a person’s looks and improve overall self-confidence by providing youthful contours and highlighting attractive facial features. The best candidates for dermal fillers are healthy individuals who are not prone to allergic reactions and who are realistic about what the treatment can afford, following a complete consultation.

DERMAL FILLER CONSULTATION

A formal appointment should be scheduled to introduce the doctor and patient, and extra time may be allotted for a treatment session if the patient is ready to proceed. Typically, these hour-long meetings include an in-depth discussion about aesthetic preferences and the procedure as a whole. This includes pros and cons and, most importantly, the concept of realistic expectations with regard to results.

FAQS ABOUT DERMAL FILLERS

HOW MUCH MATERIAL WILL BE INJECTED DURING EACH DERMAL FILLER TREATMENT?

The amount of gel needed for a successful transformation is dependent upon the areas treated, including the depth of the wrinkles or lines and the amount of volume to be replaced. Dr. Tornambe makes every effort to provide a treatment that aligns with a patient’s desires and expectations and that adheres to any budgetary concerns.

WHEN CAN ONE RESUME A REGULAR SCHEDULE AFTER UNDERGOING DERMAL FILLERS?

There is little discomfort following an injection series, but sometimes minor bruising may be visible. The doctor provides patients with a small to-go ice pack directly after the treatment to control pain, swelling, and bruising. Patients are able to continue with their regularly scheduled plans right after the office visit, though they are cautioned to wait 12 hours to perform any physically strenuous activities.

CAN PATIENTS BE TREATED WITH DERMAL FILLERS AND BOTOX SIMULTANEOUSLY?

This requested regimen is available through a combination treatment program. The dual approach may include dermal filler injections into the smile lines and Botox for the forehead wrinkles, or other combinations. While injectable fillers aim to provide a subepidermal cushion, Botox injections act on area nerves to prevent wrinkles from forming altogether.

HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS OF A DERMAL FILLER TREATMENT LAST?

Dermal Fillers are not permanent and must be repeated to maintain optimal results. JUVÉDERM® ULTRA PLUS™ can last between 6-9 months, while JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® and RADIESSE ® or RADIESSE ®  (+), may last up to 2 years, depending on both the location and indication.

ALL TYPES OF DOCTORS SEEM TO BE INJECTING DERMAL FILLERS, BUT WHO SHOULD PATIENTS SEE FOR THE BEST RESULTS?

Board certified plastic surgeons should administer dermal fillers as they are expertly trained in facial anatomy and aesthetics of the face. These skilled practitioners provide the most consistent results. Some board certified cosmetic dermatologists can also execute exceptional treatments, providing ideal cosmetic results.
