Liposuction Q & A

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical technique to remove deposits of fat from nearly anywhere in your body. It’s an effective treatment when you can’t lose excess fat through a good diet and routine exercise. With liposuction, you can achieve long-lasting results with a slimmer, naturally contoured appearance.

Dr. Tornambe uses suction-assistance to remove stubborn fat from your:

  • Neck
  • Chin
  • Back
  • Knees
  • Thighs
  • Abdomen
  • Buttocks
  • Breasts
  • Upper arms

Liposuction is not a weight loss tool. It’s meant to eliminate stubborn fat deposits that aren’t affected by a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Tornambe can determine if you’re a good candidate for liposuction during your initial consultation.

What happens during liposuction surgery?

Dr. Tornambe carefully marks the areas of your body where you desire treatment. He uses ultrasonic liposuction technology to target fat cells. The ultrasonic energy melts away fat cells, which Dr. Tornambe vacuums out with a gentle suction.

Ultrasonic liposuction is effective at destroying excess fat without damaging surrounding tissue or blood vessels. This gives you the advantage of faster healing and less blood loss.

Dr. Tornambe performs liposuction procedures in his state-of-the-art Upper East Side operating suite under general anesthesia or light sedation. A board-certified anesthesiologist administers and monitors your sedation throughout surgery.

How long does recovery from liposuction take?

Following treatment, you recover for a few hours under the care of a registered nurse before you can go home. You will have an elastic garment that you need to wear for up to two weeks during your recovery to minimize swelling and encourage your skin to contract.

You can expect to return to work in about a week after surgery. You may experience some pain or discomfort that you can manage with pain relievers. To care for your incision sites, Dr. Tornambe provides after-care instructions to help minimize the appearance of scars.

Strenuous activity needs to be limited for the first two weeks after surgery to ensure your body heals properly. Dr. Tornambe monitors your healing and will let you know when you can return to your normal routine without limitations.

How long do liposuction results last?

It can take up to six months to see the full results of liposuction. You can expect results to be long-lasting. Once the ultrasonic energy destroys the fat cells, they are gone for good. Through a good diet and regular exercise, you can maintain your results effectively.
